With winter upon us and snow coming and going, many of us would rather be growing vegetables in our gardens or working on the next big landscaping project outside. I know I can't wait for warmer weather myself. Here are some tips to help you get your landscape into shape and get you out of the house.
1. Mulching over the winter is an effective way to cut down on the amount of weeds that pop up during the spring.
Once all the leaves have fallen in the winter, we will clean out our mulch beds and go ahead and put down a fresh layer of mulch. I enjoy this part of the season when there are not a ton of weeds constantly sprouting up and no leaves are falling into the beds. The front mulch beds look nice and neat and clean for the rest of the winter. When Spring hits I am already one step ahead of the ever annoying weed battle.
2. Trimming Perennials
You want to trim your perennials in order to avoid the dead, previous years foliage from mixing with the new foliage. Typically, this can be achieved by using a gasoline or electric hedge trimmer. You can use the hand held variety, but if you have several plants to cut it will take longer and be more labor intensive.

3. Begin planning your Spring projects
Winter is a great time to start planning your Spring projects. We use graph paper and lay out the garden for the Spring. We try to practice good crop rotation procedures to ensure we don't deplete all the nutrients from the soil.
You can also begin to think about the bulbs you would like to plant to liven up the garden.
